The team approach works best in identifying students with anxiety and avoidance behaviors. Teachers, school staff, parents, students, and outside supports working together to establish a consistent structure/pattern can be the foundation to success.
For Parents
Possible Symptoms of School Anxiety/Avoidance Behaviors
- Child's upset about school more often than other children their age
- Child’s feelings/attitudes towards school have changed negatively
- Child avoids certain aspects of school, (i.e. gym class, certain teachers, etc.)
- Certain behavior patterns occur only on school days
- Child exhibits stomach aches, headaches, throwing up, etc. especially on school days
- Child struggles with social skills and peer relations
- Child struggles to complete academic tasks and becomes easily overwhelmed with home and school assignments.
For School Personnel
Identifying a Student at Risk
- Excessive truancies from school
- Avoidance of activities or interactions in which student previously participated
- Change in homework patterns (refusal, missing, or incomplete assignments)
- Patterns of academic failure, (i.e. decrease in grades, changes in test performance, etc.)
- Pattern of negative peer relations such as decreased social activities/isolation
- Decreased motivation associated with negative feelings towards school
