Intensive Training Programs at the Center for Professional Education
Application Deadline Extended to August 31st!
Alexian Brothers Center for Professional Education is offering three new training programs for 2010-2011. These certificate-based programs are intended for individuals who are currently working with a master's degree or higher in the mental health field. Participants will receive didactic training, handouts, readings, supervision, and consultation. Beginning September 2010, each program will run one Saturday per month (on either a 9-month or 12-month schedule) and will be offered in the following content areas:
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy with Children, Adolescents, and Families
The Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy with Children, Adolescents, and Families training program will be led by Mark A. Reinecke, PhD, ABPP, ACT, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University, and chief of the division of psychology. This year-long course is designed to provide participants with an understanding of how cognitive and behavioral models can be used in conceptualizing and treating behavioral and emotional disorders among youth. Vulnerability factors for child psychopathology, and how cognitive-behavioral models can be used to guide both prevention and treatment programs will be examined. The goal is practical - to provide clinicians with effective strategies for assessing and treating a wide range of difficulties experienced by children, adolescents, and families.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy & Exposure Response Prevention Treatment for Anxiety
The Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy & Exposure Response Prevention Treatment for Anxiety training program will be led by Patrick B. McGrath, Ph.D., Director of The Center for Anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorders at Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital. This 9-month course is designed to provide participants with an understanding of all of the Anxiety Disorders, cognitive behavioral models of treatment, and exposure and response prevention models of treatment for anxiety. The goal is to provide clinicians with practical knowledge that will assist them in defining, assessing, and treating all of the Anxiety Disorders across the lifespan.

Strategic Interactional Family Therapy (1st year: 2010-2011)
The Strategic Interactional Family Therapy training program will be led by Susan Mackey, Ph.D., LMFT, former Clinical Director of the Family Institute and former Director of Training/Strategies at Associates in Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Mackey is presently in private practice, on staff at The Family Institute, and lectures at Northwestern University in the School of Education and Social Policy. This 9-month course is designed to provide participants with a model of therapy that incorporates strategies and frameworks within the varied models of family therapy. The goal is to offer clinicians a blueprint for practicing an integrative model that will organize therapeutic decision-making.

Couples & Marital Therapy (2nd year: 2011-2012)
The Couples & Marital Therapy training program will be led by Sara Brandt, Ph.D., MS, LMFT, Founder of Brandt Therapy Clinics. This 9-month course is designed to provide participants with a clear, research-based model of working with couples called Differentiated Couples Therapy. Basic precepts in Family Systems Theory will be taught as a base, and participants will then be introduced to various areas of research including Gottman's relationship research.
