Panic & Anxiety Disorder Services at the Center for Mental Health

At Alexian Brothers Center for Mental Health, we recognize that Anxiety Disorders arise in large part from distorted, illogical thoughts.  In order to help clients decrease symptoms of anxiety, we use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which has been shown by the National Institute of Mental Health to be the most effective treatment approach for many people with Anxiety Disorders.

With CBT, clients learn to identify and change the thinking patterns that create and reinforce their fears and to change the way they react to anxiety-provoking situations.  In addition, a newer form of treatment called "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy" (ACT) is offered.  This method focuses on acceptance of  thoughts and emotions while implementing behavior changes that are consistent with personal values. This approach uses a focus on mindfulness, acceptance and value-directed intervention. The goal of this treatment model is to remove anxiety-provoking barriers that affect the ability to have meaningful recovery.

Clients start the program with a complete evaluation by a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor who specializes in CBT and/or ACT and the treatment of Anxiety disorders.  In addition, all clients are encouraged to meet with their primary care physician prior to starting the program to determine whether there are any medical causes occurring with or underlying their symptoms.

Clients can choose to participate in a 10-week Overcoming Anxiety group, individual therapy or both. Clients may also request a consultation with a psychiatrist to determine if medication could be a useful addition to their treatment.

A free "Alumni Support Group" is offered every other week.  This group is open to all clients who have completed the Overcoming Anxiety Group.

If you feel that you may need further evaluation by a trained anxiety specialist, please contact Alexian Brothers Center for Mental Health at 847-952-7464 and ask about our Panic and Anxiety Disorder Services.

Evidence-Based Success in Treating Anxiety

Since May of 2008, 71 participants have completed the Overcoming Anxiety group.  The average reduction of symptoms of anxiety and depression was over 40% during the course of the ten weeks.

Symptoms were evaluated based on the Burns Anxiety Inventory and Burns Depression Checklist or the Brief Mood Survey by David Burns.
