The word “Endoscopy” refers to using a flexible scope with a light at the end to look inside the body. In most instances a camera is attached to the endoscope to view pictures on a TV monitor.

Alexian Brothers Health System offers four endoscopic procedures:
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
Also known as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, this procedure is used to examine the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. This procedure is used in the diagnosis of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), esophageal cancer, and helps to identify inflammation, ulcers and tumors.
Colonoscopy
Recommended for adults starting at age 50, this procedure is used to screen for colorectal cancer, the third leading cause of cancer death for men and women. Colonoscopy examines the entire length of the colon. This procedure is also used for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
Sigmoidoscopy
Similar to the colonoscopy, this procedure examines just the lower portion of the colon. This test is used to look for abnormal growths such as tumors or polyps inflammation, bleeding, hemorrhoids and other conditions such as diverticulosis in that portion of the colon.
Bronchoscopy
This procedure allows your doctor to examine your throat, larynx, trachea and lower airways through a thin viewing instrument called a bronchoscope. Bronchoscopy may be done to diagnose problems with the airway, the lungs, or with lymph nodes in the chest and to screen for early lung cancer detection.
