Ambulatory EEG (AEEG) Study
What
is an Ambulatory EEG (AEEG) study and why do I need it?
AEEG monitoring is a relatively recent technology
that allows prolonged EEG recordings in the comfort of your home. Its ability
to record continuously for up to 72 hours increases the likelihood of recording
those events that occur only intermittently. As opposed to a routine EEG, which monitors only
a short snippet of time, an AEEG provides a more complete picture, and aids
your physician in diagnosis.
What
should I expect at my appointment and afterward?
An EEG technologist applies up to 24 electrodes to
your scalp and two ECG leads on your chest. A special heat activated tape will hold the electrodes in place securely
for the test’s duration. Your
technologist will explain this procedure in detail and answer any questions you
may have on the day of your test. Please
allow two hours to complete the AEEG set-up and training.
Once applied, the electrodes will be connected to a
lightweight, battery-operated recorder worn around your waist (or in a backpack
for children) that is approximately the size of a small cassette player. Additionally, if your physician has ordered
it, you will have a portable video unit to which you will connect whenever you
are immobile (i.e., watching TV, reading a book, in bed, etc.).
What
am I allowed to do while I am on the machine?
Most normal daily activities are fine, although you may
opt to spend most of the testing session at home. Your doctor may have specific orders in this
regard. Avoid any strenuous activities
such as jogging. It is imperative to
keep the instrumentation dry so please, do not take showers or baths during the
AEEG recording period.
What
should I do to prepare for the test?
Wash and dry your hair
thoroughly before your AEEG appointment.
Do not apply gel, hairspray, or oil-based products to your hair after
washing it. Please avoid elaborate
hairstyles. Do not braid or tease your
hair and remove any hairpieces or hair extensions.
Wear comfortable casual
clothing with a button-down top on the day of your testing. Avoid clothing that you must pull over your
head. You may want to bring a loose hat or scarf to cover the head wrap that we
must apply to keep the electrodes fastened securely for the duration of your
testing.
You may not chew gum
during your AEEG.
If possible, bring one
person who will be staying with you during your testing so they too may learn
to operate the AEEG device. Accompanying persons may wait for you in our waiting
room.
How
does the system operate?
You will be given one or two recording devices
depending upon what your physician has ordered. The first device that everyone will wear is a small recorder that is worn
around your waist. Once activated by our technologist, it will record continuously
until you return to our Center to have it taken off. This recorder is equipped with an Event
Button that you will push each time you experience your typical event.
The second system is a video recorder. It records only when it is connected to the
recorder you are wearing. If you have
both units, please remember to connect them as soon as you get home.
Why
would my doctor include the video in my study?
Video, when recorded along with EEG, provides additive
information. Please position the video so your face and upper body are visible
whenever possible. To improve the quality of the video recording, avoid placing
bright lighting directly beside or behind you.
