How long does it take to schedule Gamma Knife treatment ?
The Gamma Knife treatment can be scheduled within a month.

Does insurance cover the cost of Gamma Knife treatment ?
Stereotactic radiosurgery is a Medicare-approved procedure and is covered by most third-party insurers. Our staff will pre-authorize the Gamma Knife procedure with your insurance company.

Do I say overnight at the hospital?
Most patients are able to leave very shortly after the Gamma Knife procedure.

How soon can I go back to work?
Some patients return to normal activity and work the next day after the Gamma knife procedure.

I'm claustrophobic.  Will that be a problem?
No, you will receive sedation to calm your nerves. Be assured that only your head will be inside the unit. Television monitoring is used throughout the Gamma Knife procedure, and two-way voice communication is possible.

I have a pacemaker and can't have an MRI scan. Can I still be treated?
Yes, you will have a CT scan instead of an MRI scan.

Do the pins on the head frame go through the scalp?
Yes, the frame is anchored to your skull so that the frame will not move. The area is numbed with local anesthesia. When the frame is removed, you may have a slight headache, minor swelling, numbness, or a tingling sensation where the frame was attached. These feelings are normal and will disappear with time.

When can I eat?
You may have no food or drink after midnight the night before treatment. Upon completion of the Gamma Knife procedure you will be able to resume eating normally. A snack will be provided to you in the recovery area.

Will I lose my hair after Gamma Knife treatment ?
99% of the time patients do not lose their hair. Occasionally if a tumor is close to the surface of the skull a small patch of hair maybe lost. Regrowth usually occurs within 6 months.

When will I know if the Gamma Knife treatment worked?
You will be asked to have an MRI or CT scan about 3 months after the Gamma Knife treatment. The treating neurosurgeon will perform a progress assessment and further scan intervals will be determined.

With whom do I follow up with after Gamma Knife treatment ?
You will continue to see your referring physician.
